Renfrew manager Jimmy Quigley believes Saturday’s narrow defeat to Blantyre Victoria sums up his team's season so far.
The hosts lost 1-0 at New Western Park as an own goal from Logan Punton in the second half handed the promotion-chasing Lanarkshire outfit all three points.
As a result, Renfrew find themselves in an awkward position towards the foot of the First Division table.
Quigley’s troops are currently seven points clear of the relegation zone but have played up to six games more than the chasing pack and it is sure to be a nervous end to the season for them.
Renfrew were back in action for the first time in a fortnight but Quigley insists there was no rustiness involved in what was a keenly-contested match.
He told Gazette Sport: “The break probably came at a bad time because we played really well against Drumchapel before we had a couple of weeks off.
“We had a couple of friendlies in that time, with some good wins over Kirkintilloch Rob Roy and Greenock.
“Blantyre are where they are because they are hard to beat and very organised and we matched that for the first half.
“It was going to take a mistake from either side for there to be a winner and it just so happened a deflection into our own goal has killed us.
“In the first half, we had plenty of chances but never took them, which has been the story of the season so far.
“It’s not a result we'll over-analyse, because there wasn’t anything in the game. We’ll dust ourselves down and get right back at it.”
Renfrew head into a massive period of games over the next few weeks, with their next three fixtures all against teams below them in the table.
Quigley’s side face Cambuslang Rangers, Maybole and Neilston before the end of next month and he admits the outcome of those clashes is likely to shape the remainder of Renfrew’s campaign.
He added: “It could be a season defining few weeks. Every game is a cup final, so we need points from all of them.
“We’ll just be looking at the next game. No-one has any right to beat anyone in this league and that’s why it’s so tight.
“You can’t look too far in the future, you just need to compete with the team in front of you on the day.”
Renfrew's match against Cambuslang at Somervell Park on Saturday kicks off at 2pm.
