Renfrew manager Jimmy Quigley has revealed that goalkeeper Danny McLeay was left disappointed by his performance on Saturday...despite scoring from his own box and saving a penalty.
McLeay netted the equaliser against Kilwinning Rangers when his long punt bounced over home shot-stopper George O’Connor and into the net.
He then capped a memorable afternoon at Buffs Park by making a stunning save to keep out Jordan Stuart’s spot-kick as he dived to his right to claw the ball onto the crossbar in the closing stages.
The match ended 1-1 but, despite finding himself on the scoresheet and performing penalty heroics, failing to keep out Mark Lamont’s long-range drive in the first half was the only thing on McLeay’s mind after the final whistle blew.
Quigley told Gazette Sport: “Danny kicks the ball a mile anyway and he’s done it even more so this time and it’s bounced right over the goalkeeper and a gust of wind has taken it into the net.
“After the game, the only thing he was saying was that he should have done better with the one he did let in because he got a hand to it but he’s made a terrific save from the penalty.
"The player that was taking it was giving him a bit of grief in the build-up, which made it all a wee bit sweeter.
“It was a world-class save to push it onto the bar. It was a definitely a man-of-the-match display.”
Renfrew's point was well earned, although Quigley admits he was disappointed not to bag all three.
He said: "It’s a tough place to go and, on the balance of play, I think we probably could have won it.
“We had some good chances in the first half and then a couple of penalty incidents that never went our way.
“They troubled us with about 15 minutes to go but overall I think we were the better side."
Renfrew will host Thorn Athletic this Saturday in a festive friendly before returning to league action the following week for their final match of 2023 as they take on Thorniewood.
Quigley said: “The friendly against Thorn will keep the boys ticking over because we won’t be training over Christmas.
“I would be happy with no injuries. We have really struggled with that this season, so fingers crossed everybody stays fit.”
