Renfrew boss Jimmy Quigley has challenged his players to use the disappointment of their Cup Winners’ Shield loss as motivation to secure the Second Division title.

The New Western Park side suffered defeat at Brownlands Park on Saturday as East of Scotland League outfit Luncarty booked their place in next season’s Scottish Cup.

The teams, along with Abbey Vale, had qualified for a three-way play-off after trophy success in their respective regions, with a spot in the showpiece competition up for grabs.

However, Renfrew found themselves 3-0 down against Luncarty shortly after the interval, with a second half strike by Dom Innes proving to be nothing more than a consolation.

Quigley believes too many of his players failed to produce their best form in Perthshire and admits the second goal was a killer.

He told Gazette Sport: “We never really turned up. We didn’t deserve to get through with the performance we put on, we were sloppy in our performance and everyone just seemed to have one of those days.

“It’s a shame it was that day we had so many players off the boil because we have been consistent this year, so we’ll just need to dust ourselves down and take it on the chin and move on.

“We lost two really poor goals and one just before half-time which really knocked the stuffing out of us. They had three shots on goal and scored three, so it was just one of those days.

“The players were hurting after Saturday. They are a good, honest bunch of boys and you could see in their faces it was a chance passed up by ourselves, so we need to use that as fuel and feed it into getting promoted.”

Renfrew return to league action on Saturday knowing that three points against Kilsyth Rangers will secure promotion.

Quigley’s team won 3-1 at fellow promotion-chasers Maybole in their last league match to take a giant step towards earning their place in the First Division next season.

“Maybole are a really good team and it was a massive result for us,” said Quigley. “It put a bit of a cushion between them and ourselves.

“We’ve got four games to go and, if we get three points on Saturday, we’re promoted. After that, it’s about trying to win the league by winning two of the final three games.”

Kick-off at Duncansfield on Saturday is at 2pm.
