Renfrew boss Jimmy Quigley hopes his players can take inspiration from Drumchapel United as they try to secure the Strathclyde Demolition Cup.
The New Western Park side will meet Whitletts Victoria in the final on January 27 after knocking out St Peter’s, Saltcoats Victoria and Finnart before beating St Cadoc’s in last month’s semi-final clash.
Winning the trophy gives clubs the chance to qualify for the senior Scottish Cup, just as Drumchapel United did last season.
They went on beat League One outfit Edinburgh City in what was considered to be one of the competition’s biggest upsets in recent years.
If Renfrew are successful against Whitletts, they will go into play-offs with the winners of the Alex Jack Cup, contested by clubs from the East of Scotland Football League, and the Alba Cup, which involves teams from the South of Scotland Football League.
The play-off winners will then progress to the Scottish Cup.
Quigley’s side meet First Division outfit Whitletts at the neutral venue of New Tinto Park.
And, despite beating the team that currently top that division in the semi-finals, he isn’t taking anything for granted.
Quigley said: “The boys are buzzing about the final and what Drumchapel have done is definitely something to look up to.
“You’ve got to take it one game at a time because we’d go into a round robin with the South and East winners but we have to get past Whitletts first.
“Their league position isn’t where they will want it to be but they are still a good team.
“We’ve lost the element of surprise because St Cadoc’s are doing well in the league and we’ve been the better team against them.”
It took a penalty shootout for Renfrew to get past St Cadoc’s at New Western Park, although Quigley insists the victory was well deserved.
“We were excellent to a man against St Cadoc’s,” he said. “The boys did everything we asked them to do and all won their individual battles.”
Renfrew’s game against Kilsyth Rangers on Hogmanay was postponed but Quigley’s team are scheduled to return to league action this Saturday, when Wishaw Juniors visit New Western Park, with kick-off at 1.30pm.
