Renfrew manager Jimmy Quigley admits he got it wrong as his team was knocked out of the West of Scotland Football League Cup on Saturday.
The hosts were 3-0 down to Rutherglen Glencairn at the half-time break at New Western Park and, despite pulling one back through Dominic Lavelle in the closing stages, it was the First Division side who advanced to the third round.
Quigley made seven changes to his line-up after the previous week’s success against St Cadoc’s in the semi-finals of the Strathclyde Demolition Cup.
And he reckons a poor display in the opening 45 minutes meant the new-look team didn’t give itself a chance of victory.
Quigley told Gazette Sport: “I made changes to give boys an opportunity to impress, so it’s probably my fault. I’ll take the blame. Maybe too many changes upset the apple cart and the fluidity of the team.
“They were on such a high after last week, so I thought it was only fair to give other boys an opportunity to go and do well in a cup and that’s the reason I changed things about but hindsight is wonderful.
“I was asking a lot of them to come into key positions and perform since they haven’t played for a while but I was trying to balance that between giving them a game and trying to win the game as well.
“Rutherglen started well in the first 10 minutes but we were sloppy and gave the ball away in needless areas. The three goals were preventable from our point of view.
“We started the second half a wee bit better and came into the game but they had chances when we were pressing.
“There are no complaints, the better team won on the day.”
Renfrew are due to host Maryhill at New Western Park on Saturday but, with more freezing conditions forecast over the next couple of days, Quigley admits he isn’t overly optimistic about the game going ahead.
He said: “Our training was cancelled on Monday because it was frozen, so we’re looking for the temperature to drop on Thursday and Friday and Saturday is meant to be mild.
“I’d like the game to be on because we want more points in the league when other teams aren’t playing.”
Should the match be given the green light, kick-off will be at 1.30pm.
