THORN Athletic reached the semi-finals of the Jimmy Marshall Cup in 2009 with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Duncanrig - who had denied them top spot in the League Cup earlier in that season.
The visitors stunned the hosts when midfielder Mark Campbell’s long-range shot cracked the inside of the post and nestled in the opposite corner. Paul Young delivered a stunning second not long after when his curling free-kick left the keeper stranded.
Lee Forsyth nodded in a third from a cross. Stuart Robertson added a fourth with his head to put the game beyond any doubt.
The wind played a large part in the fifth goal when Willie Armour’s curling corner picked up pace and sailed past the helpless goalkeeper.
Duncanrig looked stunned and despite Thorn anticipating an onslaught from the home side in the second half it never arrived.
