A popular Christmas lights switch-on event has been cancelled as Storm Bert is set to hit Scotland.

The event in Renfrew was meant to take place on Saturday, with a day of festivities planned in the town centre – including live performances, a family funfair and a Christmas market.

However, as the region prepares for the impact of Storm Bert, the event has been cancelled to prioritise the safety of staff and attendees.

In a post on Facebook, John Shaw, SNP councillor for Renfrew North and Braehead, wrote: “Unfortunately I’ve had notification through from our events team that the Switch On event scheduled for the town centre tomorrow has been cancelled due to the forecast storm tomorrow making it difficult and potentially dangerous for the team and contractors setting up alongside visitors and residents travelling to the event.”

The weather in Renfrew on Saturday is forecast to have heavy rain with temperatures as low as 1C.

The town has narrowly avoided a yellow weather warning in place over the weekend across most of the country.

(Image: Met Office) Renfrewshire Council confirmed the lights would still be switched on as planned, and alternative festive activities would take place in the coming weeks.

A council statement reads: “Public safety is our top priority, and we must ensure our events are safe and enjoyable for everyone involved and we don’t want to encourage people to travel when the weather conditions are expected to be very poor.

“We’re very sorry to have to take this decision and we know the event is a favourite for people in the town and visitors.

“The town’s Christmas lights will still be switched on from 5pm, and we are planning alternative festive family activities for Renfrew over the next few weeks.

“Details will be released as soon as possible.”
