PUPILS and staff at a Paisley school are celebrating following a glowing "report card" from inspectors.

The Education Scotland team praised staff at Ralston Primary for “working together very well to ensure a strong culture of positive relationships across the school and nursery.”

The school was also commended for its “very effective approaches to raising attainment in reading and writing” and the report noted: “As a result, children make very strong progress in English and literacy across the school and nursery.”

The inspectors said children in P1 and P2 “learn from very positive approaches to high-quality play” and teachers “plan exciting activities that allow children to develop their curiosity and creativity.”

The report continued: “Children benefit from a culture in school where their many achievements are encouraged and celebrated by staff. The headteacher and staff ensure these are carefully tracked to ensure that as many children as possible benefit from enriching experiences.”

Areas for improvement were identified and discussed with the headteacher and a representative from Renfrewshire Council.

Inspectors said the school should build on its “highly successful approaches to raising attainment in literacy, continue with plans to further develop children’s attainment in numeracy and continue to develop approaches to planning in the nursery to ensure there is a clear focus on learning.”

Jillian McGown, headteacher, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our inspection report and the recognition of a strong culture of positive relationships across the school, resulting in children being confident, articulate, motivated, co-operative and independent in their learning.”

She added: “This has been possible through the hard work of staff and support we receive from our families. We will continue to build on the good practice highlighted in the report as we focus on providing excellent experiences for our pupils.”

Councillor Emma Rodden, education convener of Renfrewshire Council, said: “These grades are the result of a lot of hard work and effort by teaching and school staff, pupils and families all working together to create an enriching learning experience for children.

"The strength of leadership in the school and the focus on celebrating achievements across both school and nursery are vitally important to helping our young people thrive.”

Janie O’Neill, director of Children’s Services, added: “I’m proud of the work Jillian and her team do to provide a high-quality learning environment and experiences for Ralston children.”
