Plans to install new lighting on the outside of an iconic building in Bishopton have been rubber-stamped by Renfrewshire Council.
The changes will be made to the external facades of the A-listed mansion at Mar Hall Hotel after the works were approved by the local authority.
Agent company Turley’s request for listed building consent – made on behalf of Mar Hall Hospitality – was granted subject to conditions last month.
A design, access and heritage statement, which was drafted by the architectural company Unwin Jones Partnership, summarised the idea behind the project.
It said: “The proposed exterior facade lighting scheme follows a very sympathetic and sensitive approach with the heritage and architecture of the listed building at the forefront of the design.
“The scheme will ensure minimal impact on the building and surrounding environment whilst harmoniously and positively highlighting and accentuating specific architectural features.
“The lighting scheme will highlight the grandeur of the building by emphasising the form of the architecture by contrast (texture and depth) with soft, asymmetric wall washing/grazing and variations in light levels.
“Furthermore, the scheme will minimise the total number of fixtures required by means of well-considered placement and positioning of carefully selected luminaires.”
It consists of removing existing light fittings, fixings, wiring and controls; the making good of surfaces where fittings are removed; installing new LED light fittings, wiring and controls; and builder’s work for new wiring routes.

A report by council planners said: “It is considered that the removal of the larger brackets and flood lights with the proposed lighting scheme would be a welcome improvement and would be more sympathetic to the listed building and would highlight and focus on specific areas of architectural merit on the building facade.”
In its official decision notice, the council confirmed the proposal was in line with the provisions of the development plan.
The project marks another stage in a series of improvements at the five-star hotel after it was rescued from administration by Dubai-based outfit Dutco last year.
