A 20-mile walking path that connects five villages and links to the Clyde Coast path network has officially opened.

The Gryffe Valley Way was initiated by the Gryffe Valley Rotary Club as a Walk for Health project in March 2021.

It follows existing tracks, lanes, cycle tracks, and footpaths across moorland, alongside lochs and the river, and through woodlands and farmland.

The opening ceremony took place on October 6 at the River Inn in Crosslee, Houston.

More than 50 walkers and runners from local community groups participated in the event.

Mike Farley, who led the Gryffe Valley Rotary team throughout the project, said: "We had a very successful day, once again demonstrating Rotary in Action and how events such as this bring the local community together.

"We’ve introduced a passport scheme, providing certificates, prizes and rewards, which we hope will further encourage the local community, including groups of youngsters, to use the Way for recreation and health benefits."

The £1,000 award was intended to promote the Walk for Health project in the local community and encourage local groups, individuals, and families to use the Gryffe Valley Way.

Future plans for the Gryffe Valley Way include working with partners to upgrade certain areas and maintain the route as part of the Clyde Coast Path Network.

All walkers and runners using the Gryffe Valley Way can download a Gryffe Valley passport from the Rotary website.

Various competitions will be announced during 2024 and 2025, with certificates and prizes for different categories of completion.
