A painter is the first apprentice to benefit from a new partnership between West College Scotland's Paisley campus and a homebuilder.

Ross Lyle, 22, has been recruited by Persimmon Homes to work as an apprentice painter and decorator while studying at the campus.

This comes as part of Persimmon's collaboration with the college to provide apprenticeships as it expands its work across the West of Scotland.

Ross will be working on several of the developer's sites while honing his skills at the college.

Persimmon Homes, known for creating high-paid local jobs and apprenticeships as part of its developments, is now supporting West College Scotland's construction and building services department.

"We pride ourselves on working closely with construction colleges across the country to ensure that young people with the ambition and attitude needed to succeed in the industry are given a platform to do so locally."

The partnership provides students with valuable industry experience and ensures all projects are completed and available for portfolio evidence.

Persimmon has also donated building materials, including pallets of bricks, to aid on-campus learning.

Dr Lee Coutts, assistant principal creativity, technologies and skills, said: "The College’s partnership with Persimmon is a fantastic example of industry and education working hand in hand to develop the next generation of skilled workers.

"We're excited to see Ross thrive as he progresses through his apprenticeship."
