An iconic collection of football memorabilia belonging to a late St Mirren player and Manchester United legend is to go under the hammer next month.

The family of Gordon McQueen are auctioning off his football shirts, international swap shirts and medals at the "On the Road to Manchester and The Kits of Legends Auction" on October 1.

Gordon McQueenGordon McQueen (Image: PA) Gordon, who passed away aged 70 in June 2023, joined Saints in 1970 and played 77 times for The Buddies before moving down south to sign for Leeds United.

A distinguished spell in England with Leeds and Manchester United saw the 30-times capped Scotland defender become a fan favourite at both sides.

“We have some incredible memories of my dad, so we wanted to pass something on to people who can enjoy them and give collectors and fans a little bit of my dad’s experience.”

He later returned to Love Street for a spell as a coach before joining friend and former Manchester United teammate Bryan Robson at Middlesbrough.

It was announced in 2021 that Gordon, who was born in Kilbirnie in North Ayrshire, had been diagnosed with vascular dementia.

Among the items are his 1974 Leeds United Division 1 League Championship plaque, 1975 European Cup runners-up medal (Leeds United), 1973 European Cup Winners Cup Final runners up medal (Leeds United), 1983 FA Cup winners medal (Manchester United) and 1979 FA Cup runners-up medal.

These are the 9ct gold 1979 FA Cup runners up medal, a silver and enamel 1983 Milk Cup runners up medal, and a 1983 silver-mounted and bakelite Manchester United v. Liverpool Charity Shield plaque.

Viv broke barriers and transformed English football forever by becoming the first black player to represent the England national team in an international match.

This includes items belonging to Maradona, Terry Butcher, David Beckham and the jersey worn by Birmingham City’s Ernie Curtis in the 1931 FA Cup Final.
