Community organisations in Renfrewshire will soon be able to apply for Winter Connections grants – if the green light is given by elected members this week.
The warm spaces initiative – a network of events for people to connect with others – is set to enter its third year, backed by £75,000 in council funding.
Councillors will be asked to approve guidance for this year’s programme at Wednesday’s leadership board and agree authority is delegated to the head of policy and partnerships to make awards in consultation with the leader.
Depute council leader Jacqueline Cameron, an SNP representative for Johnstone South and Elderslie, has applauded the success of the programme in recent years.
She said: “It’s been a big part of Winter Connections, the fact that it’s been focused on connections. Obviously the name is in the title.
“It’s primarily about people getting together – and being in the warm and getting a hot snack or drink is a by-product in some ways.
“I think the council officers who look at the applications are very careful to look for that sort of creativity and that sense of connection and addressing social isolation.
“Our programme has been creative and the feedback has shown that people have appreciated the chance to meet up with each other during the cold winter months.”
A report, which will be considered at the board, suggested the importance of the scheme has been recognised in areas throughout the local authority.
It said: “Winter Connections provides a network of local places and spaces where people can connect to others in their community over the winter.
“Originally established as a response to the cost-of-living crisis, the Winter Connections programme is now in its third year and has proven to be much valued within communities over the winter months.”
Councillor Cameron, chair of the Fairer Renfrewshire sub-committee, also emphasised its significance amid government plans that will restrict eligibility for winter fuel payments.
She added: “Obviously looking at what’s happening with the winter fuel payments, it’s even more important this year that we have Winter Connections because a lot of people are going to be missing out on that.
“On the Fairer Renfrewshire sub-committee, we’re certainly encouraging as many people to look at their pension credit to maximise their income, because that will open up the winter fuel payment for them, as well as council tax discount and many other benefits.
“It’s more important this year than it’s ever been.”
