THE future of a historic Category A-listed building was up for discussion at the weekend.

Renfrewshire Council held a consultation event at Kilbarchan Church to discuss possible uses for Kilbarchan Steeple and its halls.

The building, which was originally a school built in the 1750s, has fallen into disrepair and neglect over the years.

"Many residents have fond memories of dances classes, exhibitions and community events in the hall and want to see the building brought back to life."

"Whatever the future use of the building I believe that it should reflect the cultural heritage of the village. I initiated positive talks with Paisley Museum and OneRen last year to discuss textiles from the museum collection being exhibited in the Steeple when works are completed.

"I’m reassured that all ward councillors are determined to work together to ensure the future of Kilbarchan Steeple."

He said: "It was great to see such a good turnout at the exhibition, residents’ views are key to the future of the Steeple.

"The building is at the heart of the conservation area and there’s clearly potential to link to other cultural venues such as the Weavers Cottage to establish a ‘cultural quarter’ in the village."

The steeple is an iconic part of the village’s skyline and was given its A listing in 1971 due to its national architectural significance.
