AN insight has been shared into the work behind the £3 million transformation of the recently reopened Paisley Arts Centre.
The renovation project, which forms part of Renfrewshire Council’s wider investment in cultural infrastructure, modernised the performance facilities, audience experience and venue space at the B-listed building in New Street.
A host of upgrades were carried out, ranging from improved sound and lighting systems and upgraded dressing rooms to an enhanced workshop area, a refurbished main auditorium and expanded bar.
Mhairi Henderson, assistant project manager, said the team was “delighted” with the results and believe it will be a “fantastic addition” to the arts scene.
She said: “There have been several challenges along the way, but it has been incredibly rewarding to give renewed life to this grade B-listed cultural hub for Paisley.
“The venue has been brought into the 21st century and now offers more opportunity to host different performers, acts and events.
“With a modern theatrical audio and visual system and a revamped café and bar space, we expect to attract both new performers and patrons alike to this much-loved venue in the heart of Paisley.
“The investment secures the future of this historically significant building for the people of Renfrewshire.”
The arts centre played host to its first theatre show since reopening at the end of May, with audiences filling the auditorium to see When Mountains Meet.
The venue is operated by OneRen, the charity which is responsible for culture, leisure and sport in Renfrewshire.
Its renovation is part of the local authority’s broader drive, including work on the museum, town hall and learning and cultural hub.
Mhairi added: “As a smaller, sister location to Paisley Town Hall, the arts centre offers diverse performance opportunities, enhancing the town’s cultural landscape and hopefully attracting more people to the area.
“I’m looking forward to seeing cutting-edge cultural events and performances too, and maybe even some famous names looking for a more intimate venue.
“The exciting regeneration currently ongoing in Paisley is a reflection of Renfrewshire’s contribution to Scottish arts and culture and ensures the area’s continued involvement for years to come.
“It’s great to see the arts centre given the prominence it deserves as part of that.”
