1. St Luke’s duo named Rotary’s top citizens
Two kind-hearted sixth year students were crowned Young Citizen of the Year at Barrhead Rotary Club’s annual awards ceremony held at St Luke’s High School. Pupils Kerry McMahon and Niamh Byrne jointly picked up the award at the event for their active part in contributing to and witnessing the faith, life and vision, values and aims of St Luke’s High School during the last academic session and throughout their school careers.
2. Barrhead firm’s double delight on anniversary
A family business in Barrhead won a prestigious award on the same month they celebrated their 40th anniversary. AC Whyte & Co was awarded the title of Family Business of the Year at the annual Glasgow Business Awards 2014.
3. Bags of enthusiasm restores piping tradition
Two local pipers formed of the Third Barrhead and District Pipe Band. Friends Iain Grant and Jamie Mitchell had spoken at great length for a number of years about the possibility of reforming the former Third Barrhead and Rover Scout Pipe.
4. Top pop boyband on their way to Renfrewshire
Chart-topping boyband Union J were on their way to Renfrewshire to headline the area’s annual festive extravaganza. The four boys were set to perform in Paisley town centre before the town’s Christmas lights are switched on.
5. Bike starlet takes centre stage
Bike starlet Lusia Steele took centre stage in Kilmarnock as she finished first in the ScottishPower National Youth Series Under 14’s Kilmarnock Criterium. The 14-year-old Erskine girl, a member of the Johnstone Jets cycling club, fought off fierce competition to take top spot on the podium and receive her winner’s medal from Scottish cycling legend Graeme Obree.
6. Youngsters enjoy red hot week
Youngsters had a red hot week when they were paid a special visit from Renfrew Fire Station. A team of firefighters stopped off at the ABC Childminder’s Group to teach the tots about staying safe, whilst giving them the chance to get a close up view of the fire engines.
