Johnstone Out of School Service has been praised by the Care Inspectorate for providing attentive, warm and nurturing care to children.

Two inspectors carried out an unannounced visit on July 2 and July 3 and published their findings yesterday (Tuesday, July 30).

The service, which was first registered with the Care Inspectorate in 2011, is based in Auchenlodment Primary School by Johnstone Out of School Service Committee.

It provides before school, after school and holiday care to a maximum of 40 children of primary school age.

In evaluating quality, the Care Inspectorate used a six-point scale where 1 is unsatisfactory and 6 is excellent.

In the category ‘how good is our setting?’ it was rated a 5 meaning very good.

For ‘how good is our care, play and learning?’ and ‘how good is our staff team?’ it was given a 4, meaning good.

In the ‘how good is our leadership?’ category it was rated a 3 or adequate.

Several key messages were included in the report.

As well as praising staff for being attentive and providing warm, nurturing care, children were found to be happy, settled and having fun on the days of inspection.

The report also said that children could engage in a wide range of activities in the dedicated play space and that the quality assurance process should continue to be developed.

Finally, the Care Inspectorate said that self-evaluation and improvement planning should continue to be developed.

To prepare for the inspection they reviewed information about the service, including previous inspection findings, registration information, information submitted by the service and intelligence gathered since the last inspection.

In making their evaluations of the service they spoke with people using the service, gathered feedback from nine families through MS forms, spoke with staff and management, observed practice and daily life and reviewed documents.

The report also stated that no complaints have been upheld since the last inspection.
