A Renfrewshire early years establishment has announced plans for a £50,000 refurbishment after being branded 'weak' by inspectors.
Rivendale Nursery on Houston Road in Bridge of Weir received an unannounced inspection on Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9 between 9.30am and 5.30pm.
The findings of two inspectors from the Care Inspectorate were published in a report today (Wednesday, July 31).
Following the news, the provider Collin Care Ltd said they were aware and disappointed in the report but that a new management team is now in place in the nursery.
In evaluating quality during the visit last month, inspectors used a six-point scale where one is unsatisfactory and six is excellent.
Across all four categories evaluated, the service was rated a two, meaning weak.
The categories evaluated included ‘how good is our care, play and learning?’, ‘how good is our setting?’, ‘how good is our leadership?’ and ‘how good is our staff team?’.
Several key messages were outlined in the report.
To support children’s care, the nursery was told that personal plans must be completed for all children.
It was found that whilst children mostly experienced kind interactions from staff, at times “tones could have been more softer and supportive”.
The inspectors also found that most children experienced a relaxed lunchtime where their independence was promoted.
It was said that staff should engage in further learning to develop a better understanding of child development.
The nursery was also told to improve systems for the safe administration of medication.
Furthermore, inspectors also stated that “to keep children safe and healthy, the procedures for infection prevention and control needed to be improved”.
The nursery was also told that quality assurance systems should be improved to promote positive outcomes for children.
Finally, to ensure that children's needs were met across the day, inspectors also said that staff deployment needs to improve.
The nursery is registered to provide a daycare of children service to a maximum of 51 children aged from birth to those not yet attending primary school.
This includes nine children from birth to under two years, 10 children aged from two years to under three years and 32 children aged from three years to those not yet attending primary school.
Care is provided from dedicated rooms for children aged 0 to two years, two to three years and three to five years.
Children also have access to outdoor play in the enclosed garden area.
To prepare for the inspection, the Care Inspectorate reviewed information about the service, including previous inspection findings, registration information, information submitted by the service and intelligence gathered since the last inspection.
In making their evaluations of the service they spoke with children using the service, reviewed feedback from four parents, spoke with staff and management, observed practice and daily life and reviewed documents.
The report also stated that no complaints have been upheld since the last inspection.
Responding to the report Collin Care Ltd told the Gazette: "We can confirm that there is a new management team in the nursery who are working with both the Care Inspectorate and Renfrewshire Council, have already got action plans in place and are keeping all stakeholders informed of progress with these.
"Collin Care Ltd can also announce a £50,000 refurbishment of the nursery and we would hope and expect these grades to be improved upon when the Care Inspectorate return in about three months’ time."
