A Renfrewshire woman will represent Scotland this September in the Paddleboarding World Championships.

Angela Kerr only started racing seriously two years ago but she will soon come up against the world’s best in Copenhagen.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, I’m super excited and going to try enjoy it,” she said.

“If I can do it then anyone can, I hope to inspire other people to give paddle boarding a go.

“I’m 50 so I am also flying the flag for all the older ladies out there,” she added.

Angela will compete in two events, the five-kilometre ‘technical race’ and the 18-kilometre distance race.

She said: “Endurance is where my expertise lies. I’m absolutely more confident going into the distance race.”

“The nerves are kicking in; we’re amateur athletes and we’re going to be up against professionals who do this for a living,” she added.

Training with her local paddle boarding club Loch SUP, she will be representing the nation alongside Alison Rennie who trains at the same club, based in Lochwinnoch.

Angela has been training most days of the week, she has her “fingers crossed” for nice weather and “flat seas” in Denmark.

However she said the Scottish weather has prepared her for otherwise: “We just have to embrace the weather in Scotland, its good strength training when you have to battle against the wind. Whatever the weather we’re out there giving it a go.”
