A chess tournament has broken the Guinness World Record for the highest number of games played within 24 hours.

To celebrate the International Chess Federation's (FIDE) 100th anniversary, XSite Braehead hosted the FIDE 100 Chess Scotland Allegro event on July 20.

The event, which encouraged public engagement, featured fast-paced Rapidplay and Blitz tournaments where contestants played fast-paced chess matches.

Simultaneously, there were exhibitions where International Master’s Andrew Muir, Stephen Mannion, and Angus Dunningham took on several challengers.

Mannion and Dunningham claimed joint first place in the tournament, bagging a £100 prize.

Bruce Harley, centre manager at XSite, said: "Celebrating FIDE's 100th Anniversary with such a significant event was a true honour for us at XSite Braehead.

"We are proud to be part of this historic attempt to break the Guinness World Record and bring the chess community together in such a meaningful way.

“Congratulations to the winners, Stephen Mannion and Angus Dunningham who were awarded joint first place in the tournament, winning a £100 prize."
