Renfrewshire Provost has presented a 15-year-old music enthusiast with a certificate and medal for completing training in radio broadcasting.

Ashton Murney “thrived” during his work experience at Johnstone Sound, said local councillor and fellow presenter, John Hood.

Ashton was “really happy” with the special presentation by Provost Lorraine Cameron in which he received an award, medal, a memory stick with all his live shows and his very own Johnstone Sound T-shirt.

His mum Stacey said: “I am absolutely bursting with pride, I honestly can't thank Johnstone Sound enough.

“I have listened to him every Monday and I can hear how confident he is.

“I held myself together in front of everyone earlier but I'm not ashamed to admit I've been crying since I left, I am so proud of him.

“Music is Ashton's passion, and they have made dreams come true for him and myself.”

John, who helped Ashton in training, said: “It’s a total transformation, I’m very proud of him.

“We had Ashton for seven or eight weeks, and he was very quiet when he came.

“As the weeks went on, he got more and more interested in it and for the last four weeks of the training he actually went live by himself.

"Ashton even did an event at his school, Riverbrae, which was absolutely fantastic, and he had an hour presenting all the music and being live on the radio and giving requests out to his friends.

"He now looks set to have a more regular spot on the radio station for an hour a week doing a live show every time he comes down."

Johnstone Sound has now launched the Johnstone Sound Academy which aims to get more people involved with the community station.

“If anyone is interested in coming along, get in contact,” said John.
