An urgent warning to Renfrewshire residents has been issued as two major bank branches are set to close.

The Bank of Scotland branches in Bridge of Weir and Renfrew have been confirmed to be closing according to Gavin Newlands.

The branch in Bridge of Weir will close on July 1 with the Renfrew branch set to shut up shop on July 4.

The SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North said that the decision to close the banks is "inexplicable" and that it will leave one bank to cover 25,000 people.

In a post online he said: "I have just received the beyond disappointing news that the Bank of Scotland will be closing two branches within my constituency.

"I am aware that this news will come as a huge disappointment to customers in these areas, I have been told that all customers who use these branches will receive a letter with details of alternative ways they can bank.

"Which for most (people) obviously won't be in an actual bank."

The politician also stated that he has been informed no staff will lose their job with people in affected branches being offered roles in other parts of the business.

He added: "Their decisions are inexplicable to me and will leave my constituency of 70,000 plus people with just one bank branch in Erskine. Renfrew, a growing town of 25000 people, will now have no bank branches whatsoever.

"A shameful indictment on the Bank of Scotland and all those banks who've abandoned our towns and villages, including the Clydesdale, Royal Bank of Scotland, TSB, Lloyd's and Santander, all of which have left tens of thousand branchless and made banking near impossible for certain groups, particularly some of our elderly population.

"I will be meeting with the banking group on Friday to discuss the closures and the impact this will have on the local community.

"They will be left in doubt as to my opinion of these plans."
