Renfrewshire politicians have told of their disappointment following the permanent closure of a popular Braehead leisure facility.

We previously reported how Braehead Leisure Partnership had taken the decision to shut the indoor ski slope at XSite Braehead for good following a number of investigations into its viability.

Renfrewshire North and West MSP Natalie Don said she was "extremely disappointed" to learn about the closure of the site.

The SNP politician told The Gazette: "I have been in contact with the management company since January 2022 when the initial closure was announced and have worked constructively with them in the hope that another operator would be willing to take on the ski slope.

"This is not just an iconic venue for our local area but for the whole of Scotland and its loss will be felt by the many individuals and groups who have used this facility over the years.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of all involved, there was simply no operator willing to take on this site. With massively increased energy costs, the centre was simply no longer able to afford to keep the snow in place as the chances of obtaining another operator diminished.

"I am aware that there are exciting plans for the future of this community asset, albeit in a different form which will create jobs and investment here in Renfrewshire."

Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP Gavin Newlands described the closure as "really disappointing news".

He added: "I can't say it's come as a huge surprise given the sharp rise in energy costs since the site closed.

"It will come as a hammer blow to all of the users who came from all over to use the slopes, so its closure has a regional and national impact as well as a local one.

"The owners have promised that an exciting new destination attraction will take its place in the near future that will support more jobs than the ski slope.

"I will keep in touch with the management company to find out more details on this when I can."
