The closure of a popular pub in Johnstone has been described as "a blow" to the town.

It is understood The Thorn Inn recently shut its doors to customers, with an application to strike the company off the Companies House register made on Monday, August 7.

Councillor Iain McMillan, who represents Johnstone South and Elderslie, said it was "a shame" to see the pub close.

He told The Gazette: "It is a blow to Johnstone, as it has been an established business for a long time.

The Gazette:

"My grandpa used to work there in the 1960s and it had a good atmosphere about it.

"It was particularly busy with a younger clientele before the pandemic and most people of Johnstone have memories of The Thorn Inn."

Many customers have shared their sadness about the closure of the pub on social media.

Jill Baxter said: "I went there many a Tuesday night with a group of adults with learning disabilities. It was a great pub.

"I think Covid stopped people from actually wanting to go to the pub, instead people changed to drinking in the house."

Sarah Walsh wrote: "Can't believe it, that so sad, it's been there a long long time."

Grant Macleod added: "Hopefully it won't end up an empty building in the town."

The Thorn Inn was approached for comment.
