A historic landmark in Johnstone is set to undergo renovation work next month.

Work will begin on the shelter, known locally as The Shed, in the Quarrelton area of Beith Road in mid-August.

The renovation project will see the removal and cutting back of vegetation, power washing, replacement of rotten timber and slates, as well as a general clean.

Councillor Iain McMillan, who represents Johnstone South and Elderslie, said he was "delighted" that Renfrewshire Council was carrying out work to improve the shelter.

He told The Gazette: "I don't know if it's an urban myth but apparently it was built for a visit by Queen Victoria.

"Unfortunately, over the years, it's been left to rack and ruin. There were some volunteers who did some work on it last year but it needs longer-term care and attention.

"It is close to people's hearts here in Johnstone so it's good to see it being upgraded and looked after.

"Very often you go by and people are having a wee rest inside and, as it's very close to a bus stop, you sometimes see people standing in it waiting for a bus."

Councillor McMillan is hopeful that Gordon Square, located next to the shelter, will also undergo renovation work soon.

He added: "The whole Quarrelton area is fairly historic.

"Gordon Square is in commemoration of Gordon of Khartoum, who is quite a historic figure and is hopefully getting some attention pretty soon as well.

"There's also an old school building that has seen better days and needs a bit more extensive work done on it."
