A new boardwalk is among the attractions on offer at the RSPB nature reserve in Lochwinnoch this summer.

The walkway provides scenic views of water birds and the Aird Meadow Loch before ending at a viewpoint beside the Peel Tower.

Until recently, most visitors did not know that the nature reserve was home to a 16th-century fortified tower, which was built by the Sempill family as a "safe place" in times of war.

There are also a variety of self-led activities at the nature reserve, as well as a natural play area, wildlife viewing screens and a bug spotting zone.

Visitor experience manager Rob Conn said: "We're really excited to welcome visitors to RSPB Scotland Lochwinnoch this summer to enjoy all the incredible nature that can be found here. 

"Our recently installed accessible boardwalk gives visitors a fantastic waterside wander, with the chance to spot one of our most loved birds, Great Crested Grebes, as well as take in the incredible scenic views of the Aird Meadow Loch before finishing up with a nice bit of history at the Peel Tower, which dates back to the 16th century. 

"Whether you’re a dedicated wildlife wizz or simply want to spend time in the outdoors and enjoy nature, you're sure to have a cracking day out. 

"And our staff and volunteers are always happy to help out and share our enthusiasm for this great site!"

The shop in the visitor centre has a range of nature-themed goodies available, as well as a range of hot and cold drinks, ice creams and light snacks available for you to enjoy throughout your visit.
