Three Renfrewshire women are hoping to raise spirits when they perform in a musical adaption of the novel Whisky Galore next week.

Maureen Todd, 53, and her 18-year-old daughter Sam, both from Kilmacolm, will be entertaining audiences alongside Catherine Usher, 53, from Howwood.

The trio are among 15 cast members starring in the production, which is based on the story of a group of Scottish islanders who try to plunder cases of whisky from a stranded ship during the Second World War.

Windmill Productions will stage five performances of the show, from Wednesday, May 17 to Saturday, May 20, at Rutherglen Town Hall.

The Gazette:

Mum-of-two Maureen takes on the role of Dolly Waggett, the wife of an English officer commanding the Home Guard.

She told The Gazette: "Catherine and I did this same show nine years ago and we played the young things in it, but this time we're the old things!

"Having done the show before, I was really keen to get involved again and it's really interesting to now play a different character as well.

"It's a really funny show and I think nearly all of the cast knew each other beforehand, so it's been good fun to do."

However, Maureen admits that rehearsals hit some rough waters in mid-March when two members of the production team were struck down by the same life-threatening illness.

She said: "We unfortunately had some illness issues, as our director unfortunately had a stroke and then, in the same week, our prompt also suffered a stroke.

"They are both slowly recovering and we've now got a new director.

"We've been rehearsing hard and it's just a case now of making sure all the lines are there in our heads."

Last year, Maureen and Catherine plucked up the courage to go naked on stage when they performed in a production of Calendar Girls.

The Gazette:

The cast of the show also produced their own nude calendar to raise money for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Maureen is now looking forward to getting back on stage to entertain audiences once again.

She said: "Whisky Galore is a silly, madcap show but it's quite heart-warming as well.

"I would encourage people to come along to enjoy a laugh and have some fun."
