TEMPORARY average speed cameras will return to the M8 in Renfrew and Glasgow, it has been revealed.

Phase two of essential bridge refurbishment works between junction 25, Cardonald, and 25a, Braehead, will take place between April 17 and July 27. 

A 40mph speed limit will be in place. 

Throughout the duration of the works, the average speed cameras will be in operation to ensure speed limit compliance and safer working conditions for those undertaking the maintenance on the eastbound carriageway.

Last July, work took place on the westbound carriageway during phase one.

During this first phase, more than 7000 offences were recorded by the Safety Camera Unit, with motorists recorded travelling at speeds of up to 95mph.

Alan Bowater, west safety camera manager, said: “Driving at safe speeds is shown to reduce the risk of road death and injury and enable more people to make safe and healthy journeys.

“Not only does it give drivers enough time to spot and react to hazards on the road, but if an impact was to occur it would be less likely to cause serious injury or a fatality.

“Those most at risk in the event of a collision at these locations are the road workers as they have no protective shield to absorb energy from the impact.”

The scheme will benefit road users by improving the safety and condition of the bridge and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.
