AN investigation has been launched after a serial thief from Renfrew died in custody.

The body of Scott Graham was discovered by prison staff at HMP Low Moss, Bishopbriggs, on October 16 – three days after he appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court charged with another break-in.

Mr Graham, 40, had been remanded in custody, accused of attempting to open a locked property, and was due to appear in court again next month.

In 2017, he was jailed for 34 months after breaking into the home of a 70-year-old man and stealing £2,000, bank books, a passport and an iPad.

After admitting his guilt, Mr Graham was slammed by a sheriff for his repeated housebreakings and theft.

He was also convicted of stealing £550 and tobacco from a Renfrew pub and making threats towards a man.

And, in 2013, he was jailed for a year after stealing £50 from one shop and a till from another.

Lawyers acting for the serial burglar that day said he stole to feed a heroin habit he had developed as a schoolboy.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held at a later date to investigate the cause of Mr Graham’s death.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the procurator fiscal.”
