A FORMER Renfrewshire politician and Labour stalwart has died at the age of 69.

Jim Sheridan, who served as an MP for over a decade, passed away last week following a "period of illness."

He represented Paisley and Renfrewshire North, formerly called Renfrewshire West, from 2001 to 2015.

Mr Sheridan first served as a councillor in 1999 for the old Erskine Central ward and, in 2017, was elected to represent Houston, Crosslee and Linwood.

He retired from the Labour party in March this year after 40 years with the organisation.

Before entering politics, Mr Sheridan worked in shipyards from 1970 to 1978, then as a printer for the Paisley Daily Express from 1978 to 1984.

He also worked for Thales Optronics, formerly called Barr and Stroud, where he was a trade union convenor for the TGWU from 1984 to 2000.

In an email issued to local councillors, the chief executive of Renfrewshire Council informed Mr Sheridan's former colleagues of his passing.

Alan Russell wrote: "I am very sorry to share the sad news that our former councillor and colleague Jim Sheridan has passed away following a period of illness.

"I know you will want to join me in offering our sincere condolences to Jim's family at this very sad and difficult time.

"Jim was a true family man and for many years was dedicated to championing Renfrewshire as an MP, a local councillor, and latterly as deputy leader for Renfrewshire Labour."

West Scotland MSP Katy Clark was also among those to offer their condolences to Mr Sheridan's family and friends.

She tweeted: "Very sad news that former Renfrewshire Labour MP and ⁦Unite activist Jim Sheridan has passed away.

"My deepest condolences to Jean, and all his family and friends. You will be missed comrade."
