Renfrew will pay tribute to its war dead in a special week of celebrations this summer.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the original unveiling of the town’s roll of honour in Hairst Street.
The memorial carries the names of 283 people killed in two world wars and also the Falklands conflict.
Members of Renfrew Community Council are organising a series of events to mark the anniversary between August 1 and 5.
In particular, they are appealing to any surviving family members of the 283 fallen to come forward.
A special exhibition is being planned for Renfrew Museum, dedicated to the heroes, and organisers are keen to source as many photographs of them as possible to put on display.
The photos will also be shown on a special advertising hoarding in the town centre which has been obtained free of charge from the owners.
There will also be a large billboard nearby carrying a photo of the original memorial unveiling a century ago.
Moira Searl, 73, deputy chair of the community council, said: “We’re planning a ceremony at the war memorial on August 2 with the Provost and other VIPs in attendance, as well as members of the military and local children.
“There will also be a civic reception at the town hall but we want to publicly display the photographs of those who are on the roll of honour, so that they ‘come alive’ and are not just names.
“We have sourced photographs of the original unveiling in 1922, when thousands turned up, and that will be part of the display at Renfrew Museum, in the town hall.”
Organisers hope to invite the family of paratrooper Lance Corporal John Murdoch, who died in the Falklands conflict in 1982, at the age of 24, as his name is the last one on the memorial.
They would also like to hear from any family members of the only woman whose name is on the roll of honour – Flight-Lieutenant Ellen Cochrane Marshall, who died in December 1944, also aged 24.
Moira, who is a retired intensive care nurse manager, has a special interest in the project, as her late husband Brian was a Royal Naval officer.
Any relatives of those whose names are included on the memorial who would like to take part should email renfrewcommunitycouncil@gmail.com.
