RENFREW boss Jimmy Quigley has tipped Darvel to do his team a favour by securing a place in the Lowland League...and sealing promotion for the New Western Park club at the same time.
As things stand, Renfrew’s fifth-place finish in Conference B of the West of Scotland Football League isn’t enough to earn them a spot in the second tier for the 2022/23 campaign.
However, if Premier Division champions Darvel triumph in their round robin play-offs with East of Scotland winners Tranent Juniors and South of Scotland title-holders St Cuthbert Wanderers, the knock-on effect will see Quigley’s troops promoted as the best fifth-placed team across the three conferences.
Darvel face Wanderers tonight before playing Tranent on Saturday, with Quigley keeping a close eye on the Ayrshire outfit’s results.
He told Gazette Sport: “I would always fancy teams from the West over any other teams.
“I fancy Darvel. I think they are a good enough team and they have been excellent this season.
“They went on a great run and have good quality players, so fingers crossed.”
While Darvel are battling for a coveted place in the Lowland League, members of the Renfrew squad will be enjoying an end-of-season holiday in Benidorm.
However, Quigley has warned them to be ready for a tough pre-season fitness regime.
“The boys are away from Friday until Monday, so I’ll give them the following week off and we’ll get them back in on the first Monday in June,” he said.
“The first league game is at the end of July, so I want to get a good pre-season in them.”
