IT has been a busy time for members of the Renfrewshire Golf Union (RGU), with several competitions taking place.

These have included the Seniors Championship, which was held at Kilmacolm Golf Club on Friday.

The event was supported by a good number of the county's 24 clubs, as well as some players from further afield.

Round of the day came from David Walker, of Paisley Golf Club, with a net score of 65 (playing off his 15 handicap), which was enough to see him crowned 2022 Seniors Champion.

With this score, he also won the Division 2 crown by a single shot.

It was a close call in Division 1, with both Ian White (Renfrew) and Gordon Cameron (Greenock) scoring a net 67, with Ian winning on count back.

The best scratch scores of the day came from Greenock stalwarts Crawford Rae and Murdoch Carmichael, with scores of 69.

A spokesman for the RGU said: "This is the sixth year we have successfully played this competition at 'The Mini Gleneagles' in Renfrewshire.

"We would like to thank Kilmacolm Golf Club for the use of their facilities to host this event and to congratulate them on the condition of the course and the in-house facilities provided by the hospitality team."

Meanwhile, the Junior Champion of Champions event is now at the quarter-final stage, with the eight remaining players vying to claim the title held by John Jack Jnr (Gourock), who has now moved into the youth ranks.

Elsewhere, Cochrane Castle Golf Club, in Johnstone, was the setting for the 2022 RGU Boys' Stroke Play Championship.

The Caven Trophy was won by Alexander Farmer (Kilmacolm), with a gross score of 70 (one under par).

The lowest net score was by Ryan Jackson (Elderslie), with a round of 62 off a handicap of 17.

Eight scratch qualifiers in the event go forward to the RGU Match Play Championship for the Freedman Trophy, played at Kilmacolm Golf Club.

The RGU spokesman added: "The courtesy of Cochrane Castle Golf Club, the condition of the course and the hospitality provided was much appreciated.

"The Caven Trophy was again sponsored by Paisley-based company Strathand Fire and Security and we thank them for their continued support of the event."

Meanwhile, after trying various formats over the last 12 years, the Scottish Men’s Area Team Championship has returned to its previous format of a six-man team playing three foursomes in the morning and six singles in the afternoon, with Renfrewshire drawn in a tough group alongside Argyll and Bute, Lanarkshire and North East.

Renfrewshire's first match was away to North East at Portlethen Golf Club on May 1, with the visitors represented by Stewart Watt (Old Course Ranfurly), Alex Ferguson and Chris Conroy (both Paisley), Roddy McAuley (Fereneze), Grant Beaton (Bonnyton) and Jack Crawford (Williamwood), led by team captain Andrew Farmer (Kilmacolm).

In the morning foursomes, honours were even, with victory to the young pairing of McAuley and Crawford and a half-point from Watt and Beaton.

Watt led the team into the singles in the afternoon and produced a fine performance to win on the 18th.

McAuley earned a valuable half-point, while Crawford lost a narrow match at the last hole.

Ferguson and Conroy came up against form players in the foursomes but Ferguson turned the tables in the singles with a fine 4&3 victory.

It was not to be for Conroy or Beaton, who both lost, despite their best efforts.

Renfrewshire suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat overall.

In the other group match, Lanarkshire drew with Argyll and Bute.

Next up for Renfrewshire is a showdown with Argyll and Bute at Paisley Golf Club on Sunday, June 5.
