A NURSE from Kilbarchan is in line for an award after devising a project to help socially-isolated men make new friends.
Sarah Everett, who is a practice sister at Govan Health Centre, has been nominated for the Patient’s Choice accolade at the RCNi Nurse Awards after setting up Men’s Shed Govan.
Men’s Sheds are places where older men who may be suffering from loneliness can engage in activities such as woodwork.

Sarah, 51, was keen to set one up in Govan after realising many of her patients were suffering from the effects of social isolation.
After securing funding from the Queen’s Nursing Institute and liaising with council officials, she was able to set up the Men’s Shed at a derelict nursery near the health centre.
And, as a sign of appreciation for her efforts, members nominated Sarah for the award.
Sarah said: “It’s so nice of the guys to nominate me. After starting out with just five members, we’ve now got around 30. It’s been hard work but it’s been worth it and the feedback has been fantastic.
“The family of one member said the Men’s Shed had completely transformed his life after he found it tough when he lost his wife. It’s given people a purpose and somewhere to go.
“It’s very rewarding because you see the difference it makes. Also, the banter you have with the guys is great.”
Sarah, who visits the Men’s Shed regularly to offer health checks, is up against four other finalists for the award, which gives people the chance to thank a nurse, midwife, health visitor, healthcare assistant or assistant practitioner who has made a difference to them.

Renfrewshire South MSP Tom Arthur, who represents Kilbarchan, lodged a parliamentary motion at Holyrood to highlight Sarah’s efforts.
The SNP man said: “It’s clear the Men’s Shed has changed many lives and become a real community hub, with Sarah as the driving force behind it.
“Thanks to her efforts, a group of previously socially-isolated men now have a place where they can meet and enjoy meaningful activities.”
