SPORT and jobseeking may not sound like a match made in heaven but a revolutionary programme aims to prove they are ideal team-mates.
Street League engages people looking for work through sport across both Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire.

The 10-week programme supports jobseekers in working towards missing SQA qualifications and links up with local businesses, such as Paisley’s DHL, to offer work placements.

Among those who have benefitted from the Paisley-based course is Barrhead man Alan Henry.

After leaving St Luke’s High School and dropping out of an apprenticeship, he spent seven years out of work.

However, he joined Street League in June – after several friends recommended the project – and has now secured a job at Pizza Hut.

Alan, 24, said: “The long gap was difficult but, when I found about the programme, I jumped at the chance.

“When I started coming along, I never expected to get a job out of it but thought that, at the very least, I’d be able to play football with some mates.

“Sport is all about teamwork and communication and gives you a lot of the principles you need for work.

“I would never have got the job had it not been for the course.

“We got a two-week placement and were able to show what we can do and, thankfully, I got offered a position.”

Another success story is 18-year-old former Barrhead High pupil Rebecca McGinley, who started doing the course before the summer.

She has enjoyed a massive confidence boost since starting Street League a few months ago – so much so that the former Katherine Edgar School of Dance student became a social media sensation when she was filmed dancing on the course earlier this year - something she admits would never had happened were it not for the course.

Rebecca said: “The fitness side really appealed to me and the chance to try and get a job. I’ve really enjoyed the atmosphere and getting to know so many different people.

“Without doubt, the course has given me so much more confidence.”

The Paisley based course is led by Clydebank’s Lynsey McInally, who says she loves being able to combine her love of sport with helping others.

Lynsey, who is also a gym instructor in her home town, is encouraging more youngsters to get involved with Street League.

She said: “It is so great to be able to see people flourish on the course week by week.”
