Matthew Seymour, a law graduate from Bishopton, had complained of feeling ill. A short while later he tragically passed away at his home on Tuesday, October 28.
The 21-year-old, who lived with his parents in Renshaw Road, was said to have been a fit and healthy young man with no previous history of illness.
In the wake of the heartbreaking news, hundreds of tributes flooded in for Matthew on social media, with one describing him as a “true gentleman.” A touching message left by Matthew’s rugby team, Bishopton RFC, said: “To the world, rugby is a sport, to those of us involved in our sport, it’s our world and our family.
“We have, quite simply, no words to describe the loss we feel, at the sudden and tragic loss of our team mate and friend, Matthew Seymour, who died in his home this week.
“Matthew was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and quite simply, one of the good guys. The world this week, became a darker place.
“Our thoughts and prayers as a club, are with his family at this time.” Players from Bishopton RFC have also changed their profile pictures on Facebook to an image of Matthew’s rugby strip as a tribute to their late friend.
The tragic news has shook large segments of the community, including scores of the bright graduate’s former classmates and university pals, many of whom took to Facebook to pay their respects.
However Matthew’s untimely passing has been a heartbreaking blow mostly to parents Doreen and Kenneth, as well as brother Harry, who The Gazette were unable to get in touch with as we went to press.
Shattered pal Kerri Jamieson, who was also a law student at Aberdeen University, spoke of her devastation upon hearing the news.
She said: “Actually so sad that it’s always the good ones that are taken. RIP Matthew you will be missed so much.” Danny Whittle added “Thoughts go to all of his family and to his friends at the club. He was a true genuine guy.” A tribute left by Paisley Rugby Football Club also read: “All at Paisley Rugby Club were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic loss of Matthew Seymour, one of your young and talented players.
“We would like to pass on our heartfelt condolences to Matthew’s family and to all at Bishopton RFC at this very sad time.” The rugby star had graduated with a law degree in summer this year after studying at the University of Aberdeen.
A proud Matthew said on Facebook at the time: “Graduating with an honours degree in Law. Absolutely over the moon.” St Columbas Secondary School, where Matthew attended before university, also left a message on their website following the news of his untimely death.
It reads: “The school community is shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Matthew at home on Tuesday evening.” A Police Scotland spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Matthew’s death.
His funeral will take place at noon this Friday, November 7 at Greenock Crematorium. Everyone is invited to gather afterwards at Ingleston Country Club, Bishopton.
