Johnstone Burgh were in fine form last night as they swept aside Renfrew to reach the quarter-finals of the Sectional League Cup thanks to a Ryan Officer hat-trick.

Jamie McKim's side did well to qualify from a tough group, seeing off both Neilston and Arthurlie to top their section and they put in an even more emphatic display against Premiership new boys Renfrew in the 4-0 rout.

McKim blasted his side for their 'complacency' as they dropped points at the weekend. But, there was no sign of that here as they got off to a flier, opening the scoring early on after Gary Nugent found Officer with a pin-point cross and the in-form striker made no mistake, nodding home.

Frew looked for an immediate response and had the visitors on the back foot, but Burgh did well to soak up the pressure and came close to making it two before the break when Kerr Christie tried his luck with a speculative effort from 50 yards. Dale Burgess in the Renfrew goal was left scrambling, but the effort crashed off the crossbar.

The hosts upped the tempo after the restart in search of the equaliser, but Burgh settled well and doubled their advantage when newly appointed vice-captain Niall Herron's outstanding volley left the keeper no chance, going in off the underside of the bar.

The Gazette:

It was a night to forget for Martin Ferry and Colin Clark

Two quickly became three as Kieron Magennis slipped it through to Officer, who finished with composure.

Officer then completed the rout, grabbing his hat-trick to make it four to seal the win and progression.

Burgh now face another Premiership side in Kilwinning Rangers in their quarter-final on Monday, August 20.
