SCOTS are so desperate to get their hands on the last ever edition of The Dandy, a pop up shop selling the comic opened this week in one of Scotland's biggest shopping centres to keep up with demand. Newsagent Des Barr will swap his tiny paper shop in Paisley for the giant Braehead mall, Renfrew, to sell the final issue of the comic that has been published for the past 75 years.

He has also set up a special website www.lasteverdandy.com to sell the comic.

The shopkeeper was stunned by the hundreds of people who turned up at his Sinclair Barr Newsagents, phoned and emailed him to order the comic when they realised the last edition was being published on Tuesday, December 4.

Des reckons he will sell thousands of copies at Braehead and the final edition of The Dandy will be the biggest sale of the comic for 20 years.

After realising there was a huge demand for the comic, Des sent his army of paperboys round the doors of the east end of Paisley with a leaflet reminding people that publishers DC Thomson would no longer be producing The Dandy comic.

Within a day he had almost 700 orders for the comic and when he also posted the news of the comic's demise on his shop's Facebook page, he got orders from all over the UK and from expats in Canada and America.

Des said: "It's incredible how many people want to make sure they get their hands on this historic last edition of The Dandy. I've never known anything like it.

"My staff will be posting the comic out to people all over the country.

"People are buying the comic to send to relatives and friends all over the world and many people are using this last issue of The Dandy as a stocking filler at Christmas."

Des added: "I realised there was a huge demand when more and more people asked me to order the final Dandy comic for them. I reckoned if there was that kind of demand in one area of Paisley, there would be the same demand all over Scotland.

"I approached Braehead about creating a pop up shop only selling the comic and they were great about it. It's fantastic how they are supporting a small business from Paisley like this."

Peter Beagley, Braehead's general manager, said: "We must be the only shopping centre in the country with a pop up shop selling only one item - The Dandy comic. But there appears to be a massive demand for the final issue and I'm sure Des will do well.

"The Dandy's famous cowboy character, Dan might be desperate, but it's the public who are really desperate to get their hands on the last edition."

You can get your copy of the final issue of The Dandy at Braehead's upper mall or by logging on to www.lasteverdandy.com or calling 0141 889 9879.
