We’re taking a look back at what was happening across Renfrewshire this time 10 years ago.

We have dived into the extensive archives here at the Gazette and had a look at Wednesday, May 14, to find and share some of the content that we covered then.

Do you recognise or remember these stories?

1. Life Stories Group

The Gazette:

ACCORD hospice’s occupational therapist Ishbel Murdoch had been facilitating a Life Stories Group in Paisley’s day Therapy centre.

From these groups, patient stories evolve covering subjects, such as work, hobbies, family life and achievements.

Individual discussions are either scripted or taped and the stories are created.

These stories, along with some illustrations, are then formed into a booklet.

2. Pop up choir’s song has a nice ring to it

The Gazette:

The Gazette:

A stunned woman thought her boyfriend was cheating on her – hours before he proposed in front of a flashmob choir.

Members from Erskine Community Choir volunteered as part of the Big Big Sing to help young romantic Donnie Maclean, 35, pop the question to his girlfriend of two years on Thursday.

Unsuspecting Katie Sillars, 29, was crying tears of joy as Donnie led her up the stairs outside the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow to ask her to marry him.

After saying yes, an emotional Katie told The Gazette through laughter how she thought Donnie had been acting suspiciously the night before.

3. Amazing £10k raised for Kirk Carnival as hundreds turn out.

The Gazette:

The Gazette:

Villagers had dressed to thrill at the successful Houston Kirk Carnival.

Hundreds of people flocked to the popular annual event, helping to raise almost £10,000 towards the Houston Kirk building fund.

Families throughout the village enjoyed an array of attractions, including game and food stalls plus the unveiling of the carnival queen.

And many youngsters got into the spirit of the 2014 Commonwealth Games by painting themselves bright blue for the occasion.

4. New scanner to seek out deadly diseases

The Gazette:

A new state-of-the-art CT scanner had been installed at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

As a result of a £500,000 investment in diagnostic equipment by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the scanner has been unveiled within the imaging department.

The equipment is additional to the existing scanner which was installed in 2012.

The increased diagnostic capacity will help to ensure that more Renfrewshire patients have access to a CT scan examination more efficiently.

5. Hi-tech table at nursery kids’ fingertips

The Gazette:

An award-winning Bishopton nursery has become one of the first in Scotland to invest in digital facilities.

Enchanted Forest, which operates in the Erskine Hospital Estate, has seen all of its staff complete training on the titling digital interactive table, now installed in the three to five-year room.

Designed with children in mind, the device is the same height as a normal nursery table and is built solidly of solid aluminium with a safety glass touchscreen, allowing the children to fully explore its programmes with their fingertips.

6. Top folk singer who performed

The Gazette:

Scottish singer Christine Bovill will be putting on a top-class performance in the village.

Houston Folk Club have said they are delighted to have the acclaimed jazz and folk singer visit the Carrick Centre.

And Dave Mellor, a member of the club, urged villagers to come along and enjoy some of her music on the night.
