We’re taking a look back at what was happening across Renfrewshire this time 10 years ago.

We have dived into the extensive archives here at the Gazette and had a look at Wednesday, April 30, to find and share some of the content that we covered then.

Do you recognise or remember these stories?

1. Happy project raises vital funds for Howwood facility

The Gazette:

A video sensation that hit the internet stars the staff and patients of a local hospice.

Hundreds of people had viewed the St Vincent’s team having a good old boogie to Pharrell Williams’ smash hit Happy.

The Howwood hospice created the movie in response to questions from a Barrhead DJ about it being a sad place to be.

They hoped the light-hearted video would show people what an uplifting place St Vincent’s is – and raise some much-needed cash at the same time.

2. Festival queen fulfils childhood ambition

The Gazette:

The Gazette:

Dreams really did come true for two young ladies this week when they were unveiled as festival queens.

Emma Vaughan had been taking part in Kilbarchan Lilias Day since she was five years old and, now that she is 16, is overjoyed to have been chosen for the role of Miss Lilias 2014.

The teenager was 2014's Miss Lilias and the School Queen will be 12-year-old Georgina Evans.

The new committee aims to choose a Miss Lilias each year based on her contribution to the community or good causes.

3. Members bowled over

The Gazette:

Rain showers didn't dampen the spirits at Kilmacolm Bowling Club as members flocked to its open day.

About 40 players rolled up for the first day of the new season while others turned out to enjoy the colourful spectacle.

Performing the prestigious honours were club president Jim Russell and his wife Karen, who threw the first bowl.

Club secretary Norman Johnstone said it was a marvellous event.

4. Young man clinches post

The Gazette:

A Bishopton man was on the right track towards a career in the railway after beating applicants from across the country to begin ScotRail’s Modern Apprenticeship scheme.

Neil Gillies, 21, is among 15 young people from across Scotland who had recently started the company’s apprenticeship in customer service.

The 18-month programme includes a mixture of classroom and workplace learning, with apprentices having the chance to apply for a full-time job with the train operator after completion.

5. Runners urged to put their heart into race

The Gazette:

Fleet-footed folk are being urged to get their entries in for a popular road race in Paisley.

Entries have already been flooding in for the 2014 Paisley 10K and Fun Run – but council bosses are urging more people to sign up for the August event.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “The Paisley 10K is always a popular event and this year is proving to be no exception.

“With the Commonwealth Games set to arrive in Scotland this summer, there could be no better year to be inspired by the benefits of sport and exercise."

6. Aid worker is onto rice for challenge

The Gazette:

A devoted Christian spent a week living on a diet to raise awareness of the scale of starvation.

Aimee Dalrymple, 23, embarked on a rice and beans fast before she set off abroad to help address poverty and injustice in poorer nations.

She aimed to raise money in aid of Tearfund, a Christian organisation promoting poverty awareness and supporting nations in need while helping provide food and support for those living in crisis.
