A local councillor has accused the UK Government of "forgetting Paisley" after the town missed out on recent levelling up funding.

A total of 55 "overlooked" UK towns will each be given £20million over a 10-year period to help regenerate high streets and tackle anti-social behaviour.

While seven towns in Scotland will benefit from the scheme, no communities in Renfrewshire have been allocated funding.

Councillor Jacqueline Cameron, of the SNP, described the decision by the UK Government as "a slap in the face for Paisley."

She said: "In what is clearly a Tory conference announcement ploy, they have taken the money from previous poverty-related funds and deprived Renfrewshire communities of much-needed cash.

"The SNP is delivering a bold regeneration plan for Paisley, and the administration in Renfrewshire Council has been putting our dynamic plans into effect, with a culture-led regeneration scheme, town hall refurbishment, the museum project, and the library.

"We haven't been waiting around for the UK Government to wake up to town centre regeneration, but for the Tories to ignore Scotland's largest town in a town centre investment announcement is an insult to all Paisley buddies."

The Scottish Government said it had not been consulted about how the funding could be prioritised and is not clear how the locations were identified.

A spokesperson said: "While the Scottish Government welcomes all extra funding for Scotland, it would be much better if provided to the Scottish Government via the Barnett Formula in the normal manner.

"It is extremely disappointing that we have not been consulted on how the investment could be prioritised to complement our ongoing work, and we are unclear on how the priority locations have been identified."

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the new long-term vision for towns, backed by £1.1 billion of investment, was about putting "funding in the hands of local people" to improve their communities.

The seven towns in Scotland set to benefit from the levelling up funding are Greenock, Irvine, Clydebank, Coatbridge, Dumfries, Elgin, Irvine and Kilmarnock.

They have been allocated funding according to the Levelling Up Needs Index, which takes into account metrics covering skills, pay, productivity and health, as well as the Index of Multiple Deprivation.
