THIEVES broke into six Johnstone homes in three days - using the victims own tools in some cases to smash their way inside. Thousands of pounds worth of valuables including jewellery and laptops were stolen houses in Burns Drive, Tannahill Crescent, Scott Avenue, Canal Street and Milliken Park.
Police say a string of sheds and garages were also targeted, with brazen crooks using stolen tools to force their way inside homes.
They believe the break-ins, which happened from October 12-15, could be linked, and say the culprits are still at large.
Some heartbroken families came home as early as 4pm to find their homes had been ramsacked. Others were asleep in bed when the thieves struck.
Officers say all of the break-ins took place between 4pm and 2am.
One mum, Gillian Harris said on Facebook: "I had no idea of these Johnstone robberies but I am worried now."
Another homeowner, Karen Smith also said that a friend had been targeted by robbers also just a few weeks before the break-ins.
She commented: "A friend of mine had a load of DJ equipment and other stuff stolen from a unit in Miller street, Johnstone a couple of weeks back.
"It happened sometime over a 48 hour period. They rented a storage unit near the council dump. Whoever it was would have had to climb an eight-foot wall or have got in via a hole in the council dump perimeter fence."
Johnstone Inspector Willie Patterson has suggested homeowners chain their tools as this is what is being used to commit the offences.
He said: "We would urge homeowners to be very thorough when it comes to locking up their homes, sheds and garage.
"Following the series of incidents we also think it is a good idea for people to chain up their tools as many of these have been stolen to help them break in.
