THE former Lady Captain of a golf club in Bridge of Weir has handed over funds raised in honour of Quarriers.
As Lady Captain of Ranfurly Castle Golf Club, Karen Binning was able to choose a charity to raise funds for during her tenure and chose Quarriers due to her family connection with the charity.
The team at the golf club raised £835 by having a charity bunker, a Tri-Am tournament, a Bridge afternoon and a raffle at the annual dinner.
Quarriers was once a home for orphaned and destitute children but is now one of Scotland’s largest social care providers.
Karen’s grandmother aged only six at the time and her two brothers were admitted to the children’s home after their father tragically died from typhoid and their mother had to undergo surgery.
The children stayed there for five years until 1915 when their mother remarried.
Karen and her family contacted Quarriers and were able to find more about her ancestor’s times there.
Karen said: “I wanted to raise money for Quarriers as my dad was so fascinated by the whole story. He had never mentioned this story until we moved from the east coast to Bridge of Weir, and he found out that Quarriers Village was so close by.”
Louise Strachan, Quarriers events and community fundraiser, said: “We are very grateful to Karen for choosing Quarriers as her preferred charity during her time as Lady Captain and to everyone who supported her.
"This fantastic donation will allow us to continue providing care and support to those who need it most.”
